AMD relaunched its Ryzen 7 5800X3D as the 10th Anniversary Edition, a special edition designed to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the AM4 socket. In these turbulent times, this is actually good news, since the CPU was discontinued in October 2024, leaving the platform without a high-performance CPU for gaming. With DDR5 prices skyrocketing, the return of this processor offers AM4 users a solid upgrade path, allowing them to keep their existing memory kits! Unfortunately, no sooner had the processor made an appearance—no sooner had it arrived in stores—than scalpers were there to clear out the inventory.
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D: a victim of scalpers!Â
Sold out:
To put it simply, AMD’s processor officially arrived at U.S. retailers, but it didn’t stay on the shelves for long because scalpers were quick to snap it up. In-store availability remains sporadic, with stockouts reported at Newegg, Best Buy, and B&H Photo. However, there’s still a glimmer of hope with Micro Center, which seems to be in a better position since the retailer still appears to have stock on hand. In fact, some processors are being sold as AM4 upgrade kits, which include a compatible motherboard andDDR4 memory.
Already selling for $600 on the secondary market:
Of course, the depleted stock is now showing up on the secondary market at outrageous prices. While the processor officially sells for $350, observed prices exceed $600, with peaks reaching $750. The saddest part is when there’s a genuine need and buyers are actually purchasing at these outrageous prices. Completed sales have been reported between $540 and $585.
Not a limited edition:
AMD has also confirmed that this 10th Anniversary processor is not a limited edition and is not a collector’s edition. In fact, this model will remain in production, and new shipments are already scheduled to improve availability.
Ultimately, this 10th Anniversary version is simply new packaging; there are no changes to the processor’s specifications. It still has the same number of cores/threads (8/16) and the same clock speeds (3.4/4.5 GHz). Furthermore, its return to the market offers a significant upgrade for AM4 platform owners. If you’re looking to build a new machine, other alternatives are available: the i7 14700K (which also supportsDDR4) or the Ryzen 5 7600X3D, but you’ll have to go with the very expensive DDR5.
