The Ryzen 5 9600 almost competes with the 9600X on Passmark

Broadly speaking, AMD’s processor range offers four types of CPU. Firstly, there are the X processors, the classic series, the one that was launched first. Then we have the X3D series, which is highly appreciated by the public for its extra cache. This gives the CPU a performance boost, particularly in games. But it can also make a difference to certain software applications, provided they make use of this extra cache. Finally, we have G APUs (with a large integrated graphics unit) and non-X CPUs with lower frequencies and lower prices. Today, we’re talking about one of these CPUs: the Ryzen 5 9600, which is displayed on Passmark!

This CPU shares most of its features with the 9600X. Both are based on the Zen 5 architecture and use six cores with hyperthreading. Both share the same amount of cache: 6 MB of L2 per core and 32 MB of shared L3. The TDP is estimated at 65W in both cases, but the only way to tell the two apart is by frequency. The non-X model runs at 3.8 GHz with a turbo at 5.2 GHz, compared with the 3.9/5.4 GHz of the X.

Naturally, with such similar technical specifications, the scores are also very similar. In multicore mode, the non-X 9600 is 2.2% behind its X counterpart. Here, it clocks in at 29369 pts, compared with 30016 pts for its X brother. In single threads, the 9600 is 3.2% behind with 4433 pts compared with 4581 pts.

In terms of price, this new version is expected to be around $20 cheaper than the 9600X. Prices should be in the $250 to $260 range, so we’ll have to wait and see when it becomes more widely available.
