RX 7800 XT: a strange chip?

AMD currently has one concern: the abysmal performance gap between the RX 7600 and the RX 7900 XT. To close this gap, we should normally be entitled to an RX 7800 XT, due for release… We’re not sure when. Nevertheless, the first rumors about it are starting to emerge. Via Moore’s Law is Dead we learn that the card’s chip should be quite… Strange.

RX 7800 XT: a cross between Navi 31 and Navi 32?

RX 7800 XT GPU

Clearly, the card’s chip is a little “Frankenstein”, since its chiplets are the same size as those on the Navi 31. The GCD, the central die integrating the GPU ‘s computing units, is the same 350 mm². Meanwhile, all around, we’ll be treated to the MCD, the memory caches, of which there are six.

However, the package, the foundation on which all this rests, would be much more compact. According to Moore’s Law is Dead, it would measure 40×40 mm, more in line with what we’ve come to expect from this type of chip.

The RX 7900 XTX GPU

As for the chip’s configuration, it’s pretty hard to say what we’ll be dealing with. On the other hand, we can already assume that the number of Compute Units will be between 60 and 84, 84 being the configuration of the RX 7900 XT. However, we already know that the 7800 XT will feature a 256-bit memory bus for a VRAM configuration displaying 16 GB GDDR6. So, of the six MCDs, two are ” fake “.

In the meantime, with this card, AMD should finally land on the mid-range “plus” segment to rival the RTX 4070/Ti of the greens. To be continued as always!
