Der8auer gives us a little tip on how to draw more power from ASUS’ RTX 5090 Matrix Platinum. As a reminder, the card is a limited series production model with two power connectors. While we find a classic 12V-2×6, we also have a GC-HPWR, the brand’s famous BTF connector. By shunting the latter, you can draw more current from the 12V-2×6 side – we’re talking 750W !
A mod on the RTX 5090 Matrix to make it consume more!
Basically, the modification takes place on the board’s GC-HPWR connector. By shunting the connector’s sensor pins, the card can be made to consume more power. We’re talking about a power consumption that now reaches 750W at 12V-2×6. Of course, the point of such a maneuver is to be able to overclock your card even further. So, the more current that reaches the GPU, the more potential there is for boosting frequencies. What’s more, it’s a totally reversible method, which means you don’t have to touch the card’s PCB, for example.
On the other hand, this manipulation is not functional on a day-to-day basis, or only with difficulty. Indeed, to make it work, two cables have to be soldered to the GC-HPWR connectors, making it impossible to plug in. As a result, the board must be mounted on a riser with its secondary power connector plugged into the PCIe slot extension. In reality, the board will be powered via its standard 12V-2×6.
Then, once the system has been powered up, during monitoring, power consumption stabilizes at around 750W. Not to be reproduced at home, of course, as the power connector becomes hot to the touch, while GPU Tweak displays all pins in red, with amperages in excess of 10A. Note that under normal circumstances, this type of consumption is only permitted when the card is powered by its two connectors, which activates the 800W mode. Der8auer has simply tricked a system into thinking that the board is powered from two different places, which is not the case.
