As you know, we were at Gamescom this week. There was a lot to see, but honestly, it was impossible not to stop by the Commodore booth!

Commodore 77: The Official Computer of Cyberpunk 2077

Commodore is taking advantage of Gamescom 2026 to unveil a rather unexpected collaboration with the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. In an official partnership with CD Projekt Red, the brand is unveiling the Commodore 77, a special edition of the Commodore 64 Ultimate. Behind its Night City-inspired design, the machine offers more than just a cosmetic change. It also features hardware upgrades and exclusive content designed specifically for this collaboration. This marks Commodore’s first-ever hardware partnership with a franchise in its 68-year (eventful) history.

A Commodore Directly Inspired by Night City

The Commodore 77 is based on the Commodore 64 Ultimate, but its appearance has been significantly redesigned. It features a smoky gray translucent casing, a metal plate, graffiti-style markings, and turquoise lighting. The LEDs installed in the lower section can also animate when certain content is being used. The overall design aims to capture the chunky, tactile, and deliberately retro look of many of the technologies seen in Cyberpunk 2077.

The customization extends to the software as well, with a BASIC 2.0 startup screen dedicated to Cyberpunk 2077, new menu colors, and a neon-style power indicator. Stickers, pins, collector’s packaging, and a themed spiral-bound manual are also included in this edition. The manual features lore-related content as well as BASIC programs inspired by Cyberpunk 2077 that can be entered directly into the computer.

Up to 77 MHz for this special edition

Technically, the Commodore 77 remains an FPGA-based recreation of the C64. It uses an AMD Artix XC7A100T, which is more powerful than the 50T used in the standard Commodore 64 Ultimate. This upgrade would allow the system to reach a clock speed of up to 77 MHz, compared to just 1 MHz for the original 1982 Commodore 64.

Despite these improvements, compatibility with the legacy ecosystem remains at the heart of the project. Commodore announces support for over 99.9% of the approximately 10,000 existing Commodore 64 games and peripherals, whether old or new. The machine features an HDMI output, Wi-Fi, and a USB port.

An exclusive Arasaka cartridge

Another highlight is a new 8-bit audiovisual demo developed by Arise, a well-known Polish group in the C64 scene. It is accompanied by an original soundtrack composed by LukHash, utilizing 24 channels of SID stereo music. Its code is stored on a 2 MB cartridge whose design is inspired by the shards and the Arasaka Corporation from Cyberpunk 2077. This non-interactive demo is exclusive to the Commodore 77 and is expected to add new content to the franchise’s universe.

The Commodore 77 is already available for pre-order at $377. The first deliveries are scheduled for early 2027, with shipments announced in waves starting in February. This edition is therefore primarily aimed at collectors, Commodore enthusiasts, and Cyberpunk 2077 fans looking for a machine that is as retro in concept as it is futuristic in design.
