Coming soon: an RX 9070 GRE with 16 GB VRAM?

With its RX 9070 GRE, the brand offers a card that’s well placed in the brand’s catalog. The card closes the performance gap between the RX 9060 XT and RX 9070. However, the Reds are said to be considering a 16 GB version of the card. The aim? To have a little more memory to be more at ease with high resolutions or technologies such as ray tracing, for example.

RX 9070 GRE: a 16GB version of the card in September?

Broadly speaking, it’s rumored that this new version of the card will come with a total of 16 GB of memory installed on it. However, this move to 16 GB would not be achieved simply by installing higher-density memory chips, no. Clearly, the Reds could also upgrade the bus from 192 bits to 256 bits. So, in addition to the 33% gain in memory, the card would also benefit from a gain in memory bandwidth. This would boost the card’s performance.

RX 9070 GRE: upgrading from 12 to 16GB requires a different bus

In short, why go from 12 to 16 GB? For one thing, for brand image. For many people, more VRAM = better. Secondly, it allows us to offer a solution with a little more breathing space in game, especially on titles with 4K textures, for example, or when ray tracing is enabled. We don’t say it often enough, but this technology is rather memory-hungry…

Otherwise, the rest of the chip would remain unchanged, with 48 compute units and 3072 stream processors. It remains to be seen whether the card’s operating frequency will benefit from a slight increase or not.

In any case, this RX 9070 GRE is a card we’d like to see arrive in Europe, and especially in France. As we said earlier, there’s a big performance gap between the RX 9060 XT and the RX 9070, and this is the model we need to close that gap! Finally, the wait shouldn’t be any longer, as rumors suggest a September/October launch.
