CDNA and RDNA soon to be unified at AMD!

AMD and its graphics cards are currently undergoing a number of changes. Indeed, the brand recently announced that it was abandoning the high-end segment and abandoning the king of the hill strategy, which is not allowing the reds to gain market share. Now we learn that the company wants to unify its RDNA consumer and CDNA server architectures.

Tom’s Hardware is still the source of the news, and once again it’s Jack Huynh, senior vice-president and general manager of AMD’s Computing and Graphics Business Group, who is announcing the Reds’ strategy.

Broadly speaking, the aim is to emulate NVIDIA’s strategy with Cuda by merging the two types of architecture. This would simplify optimisation for developers, with one team concentrating on gaming and the other on computing. This avoids having one team for the consumer sector and the other for the professional sector, who have to take care of everything, which is complicated from a logistical and engineering point of view.

What’s more, this also means that in the future, when a pro application is optimised, it will be optimised both for cards intended for the general public and for the professional segment. And, this will also mean something more stable on the consumer GPU side. As things stand, every time you change the memory hierarchy or sub-system, you have to re-optimise. The aim would be to have something that is clean in the long term, at least over the next three generations. This will avoid losing everything that has been done along the way and having to redo everything with each generation.

However, while this is feasible, there is still a lot of work to be done upstream.
