CAMM2: a new memory format for PCs?

0

At CES, some of us had the opportunity to visit the SK Hynix stand, which was promoting the CAMM2 memory standard… In a manner of speaking. According to the brand, this format is set to land on our desktop platforms.

CAMM2 soon on desktop platforms?

Micron CAMM 2

As we mentioned earlier, this new memory standard has already made its appearance on the laptop market. Clearly, it enables larger memory capacities to be achieved, while saving space at the same time. And that’s not all, since it can also offer dual-channel modules via a single strip. In short, why isn’t it everywhere already?

The problem is that DIMM and SO-DIMM formats are already used absolutely everywhere, and changing standards is not easy. First of all, you have to rethink the way you connect them to the motherboard. And from what we’ve learned, it’s not just a dumb connector, but a system akin to a processor socket.

Then, depending on the type of RAM , the ” socket ” varies, and we learn that DDR5 and LPDDR5/X are not the same pinout. So, depending on the type of use or the manufacturer’s choices, you’ll have to opt for one type of memory or another. Last but not least, the way in which AMD EXPO and Intel XMP memory profiles work will have to be revised to suit this new type of RAM. In short, there’s a lot of work to be done, even if this standard looks promising!
