After several rumors about the possibility of overclocking the Ryzen 7 5800X3D using 3D V-Cache, AMD has confirmed that it has blocked the feature because of bad voltage scaling.

No overclocking for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D

Yesterday, HotHardware organized a live with Robert Hallock (technical director at AMD) to talk about the Rembrandt processors (Ryzen 6000), but also about all the new AMD products, including the 5800X3D.

One of the questions that came up during the live session was related to the possibility of overclocking the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, for which we have no information on its compatibility with Ryzen Master or overclocking on the AMD website. Moreover, rumors mentioning the absence of the feature have been heard in recent weeks.

Robert Hallock answered that the processor will not be able to be overclocked in terms of core frequencies, due to the poor voltage scaling of the CPU with 3D V-Cache technology, which would be limited to between 1.3 and 1.35 volts. Nevertheless, the overclocking of theInfinity Fabric‘s memory will remain possible.

This choice is also justified by the fact that AMD has thought between waiting for the technology to become mature enough to allow a better voltage rise or using it now in view of the performance gains it brings. Robert Hallock nevertheless confirms that once the scaling problems are solved, future products using 3D V-Cache will see overclocking activity again.
