A new driver from AMD, with a new version of its RADEON Software. Version 23.7.1 adds support for numerous Vulkan API extensions. There are also a number of welcome fixes. We’re thinking in particular of the RX 7000’s high idle power consumption at high resolutions/frequencies, which has been a long time coming.

RADEON Software 23.7.1, what’s new?

Intel 101.4314 - VulkanWithout further ado, here is the list of new Vulkan extensions supported by this driver:

  • VK_KHR_cooperative_matrix for Radeon RX 7000 series
  • VK_KHR_ray_tracing_position_fetch for Radeon RX 6000 and newer series
  • VK_KHR_video_decode_h264
  • VK_KHR_video_decode_h265
  • VK_KHR_video_decode_queue
  • VK_KHR_video_queue
  • VK_EXT_device_address_binding_report
  • VK_VALVE_mutable_descriptor_type
  • VK_EXT_mutable_descriptor_type
  • VK_EXT_dynamic_rendering_unused_attachments

Patches:

In terms of patches, we find :

  • Certain virtual reality games/applications no longer suffer from sub-optimal performance or stuttering with the RX 7000.
  • No more crashes or driver timeouts when playing AV1 video using DaVinci Resolve Studio.
  • RX 7000 idle power consumption improved. This concerns certain FreeSync UHD@144 Hz or multi-monitor configurations such as: UHD@144 Hz or UHD@120 Hz 1440p@60 Hz.
  • Intermittent corruptions could be observed when playing WWE 2K23 on certain AMD graphics cards such as the RX 7900 XTX.
  • Intermittent corruptions could be observed after changing windows while playing Nioh 2 on some AMD graphics cards such as the RX 6800 XT.

Known problems :

For the time being, we’re left with the following list of known problems:

  • Application crashes can be observed intermittently when playing RuneScape on certain AMD graphics cards such as the RX 5700 XT.
  • In game, on Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix , corruptions can be observed around the character with certain AMD graphics cards such as the RX 6900 XT.
  • Stuttering can be observed on Call of Duty: Modern Warfaire II when RADEON Anti-Lag is activated. The temporary solution is simply to disable Anti-Lag.
  • Performance overlay may show a small D/A instead of FPS on some games.
  • Loss of signal may be observed after changing windows on some screens with Adaptive-Sync. This occurs with some graphics cards, such as the RX 7900 XTX.
  • Abnormal VRAM consumption can occur when using certain recording and streaming settings such as Instant Replay.

Admittedly, this version 23.7.1 doesn’t bring any new features related to video games, such as optimizations or performance gains. However, it does bring some interesting fixes. Download it here:
