We suspected that the RX 9070 GRE wouldn’t be confined to the Asian market. This time, things are almost official, with rumors and sources announcing a worldwide launch of the RX 9070 GRE for Computex.
This GRE model, initially designed for the Chinese market, should soon be arriving in Europe and the United States. Where does this board stand in the current hierarchy? It’s equipped with the Navi-48 chip, comprising 48 computing units, representing 3,072 FP32 stream processors. It offers 12 GB of GDDR6 memory operating at 18 Gbps via a 192-bit bus, with a power consumption of 220 W, similar to that of its big sister, the RX 9070. For 1440p games, it offers 29% better performance in rasterization and 17% better performance in ray tracing than the RX 9060 XT 16GB. However, it is 14% lower in rasterization and 25% lower in ray tracing than the RX 9070. It’s important to note that this new graphics card retains some of the characteristics of its predecessors, which should enable it to approach the performance of the RX 9070 when overclocked.
RX 9070 GRE: price and availability will be the keys to its success
So, in practice, this 9070 GRE is clearly aimed at 1440p, but it’s its price positioning that will be particularly closely observed. Looking at the Chinese market, the card had been introduced at a price of around 4,199 RMB, equivalent to around 512 euros. However, a simple conversion doesn’t take into account taxes, distribution margins and any specific strategic positioning AMD may decide to adopt for the European market. So we’ll have to wait and see.
In these lean times, the 9070 GRE is worth keeping an eye on (particularly for its price). If its positioning is significantly lower than that of the “classic” 9070, this card could make a good place for itself in QHD gaming PCs and configurations seeking the right balance between performance, power consumption and budget. As we’ve said before, price is key… and availability will have a direct impact on this.
