No FSR4 unofficially ported to RDNA3

If you’ve been eagerly awaiting AMD’s FSR4 port to older-generation RDNA3 graphics cards, you’ll have to wait a while longer. In an interview with PC World, Andrej Zdravkovic, AMD’s software manager, said that the technology does not deliver a satisfactory level of performance on these cards to justify an official porting. However, he said he is open to the idea of modding and even takes a pro-community approach.

FSR4: not good enough to be ported to RDNA3!

AMD RX 7900 GRE

Simply put, GPUs using the RDNA3 architecture are not, materially speaking, suitable for running FSR4. This version of AMD’s technology relies on artificial intelligence and uses FP8 calculations, a type of calculation that the RX 7000 and older models do not excel at. As a result, AMD considers the level of performance to be unsatisfactory and does not want to launch the porting to avoid disappointing its community.

However, it remains open to the idea of modding on the one hand. On the other hand, it should be noted that it is already possible to run the technology on RDNA3 using INT8 calculations. This is not optimal, but compared to native rendering, it offers better performance and image quality than FSR3, for example.

Zdravkovic is therefore inviting the community to submit suggestions with clear and defined expectations. We can assume that the company could offer an adaptation with limited features that works correctly on older generations of cards. This is similar to what NVIDIA does with its DLSS, for example. While all RTX 2000 cards are compatible, image generation modes are limited to certain series, etc.

So, FSR4 as such on RDNA3 is not on the agenda. However, adaptations of certain features are not ruled out. Stay tuned for further developments.
