A week and a half ago, we learned that a Ryzen 7 9800X3D had mysteriously gone up in smoke, just like that. While some people still have a fanboy mentality of “well, it’s not just Intel LUL”, the fact that this is happening for no apparent reason is worrying. Especially as it would appear that this is not an isolated case – there are many similar problems mentioned on the ASRock subreddit!
Ryzen 7 9800X3D: massive failures!
Broadly speaking, the 9800X3D is facing a number of problems. According to the moderators of the subreddit in question, from what they’ve been able to read, these CPUs have a very short lifespan of a few days or even a few hours depending on the case. There have even been cases of processors dying on unpacking.
Once again, this problem seems to be more prevalent on ASRock motherboards. However, several reports seem to confirm that this problem is not exclusive to the brand. In fact, we have learned from Wccftech that the company has reacted by publishing a new bios, 3.20. Although this version mentions optimisations on the RAM side, it is not impossible that underlying fixes will be deployed.
Of course, in this kind of situation, it is always advisable to update your bios. It’s also best to opt for the latest stable, non-beta version.
Similarly, AMD seems to have become aware of what’s going on, but we’re still waiting for an official response from them. Apparently, this concerns around forty CPUs, 32 of which are experiencing problems with ASRock cards. In the meantime, it seems that the company is only taking requests for after-sales service back into account in the event of a breakdown.
In short, this quarter is clearly not a good one for the hardware sector, far from it. Between stocks out on the graphics card side, technical failures on the RTX 50 and here, a Ryzen 7 9800X3Ds falling victim to an unknown evil, 2025 is off to a good start…
