Another case of a melted 12VHPWR connector… Another one. However, this time it’s more worrying that it involves an RTX 5080. In this case, although the graphics card was spared, the power supply took another hit. Indeed, the connector has melted on the side of the block, an ASUS ROG Loki, yet another one!
An ROG Loki and an RTX 5080 implicated in a new case of a melted power connector!
In this particular case, user Ambitious_Ladder1320 saw his configuration fail. While he was using his PC, he saw the wrongly inserted connector LED light up on the graphics card side. In short, he switched off his PC, reconnected the power cable and switched it back on, and everything was back to normal… Until his card started behaving strangely. Firstly, the PCIe interface went to x3, then the display resolution and refresh rate were reduced.
The PC was switched off again, while we found a user meticulously inspecting his connectivity. And that’s when he discovered the problem: the connector on the power supply side had melted. This time the graphics card, an RTX 5080, was spared, but not the power supply. As in Ivan6953‘s case, it’s once again an ASUS ROG Loki. Could there be a link between the burning cables and the power supply used? Perhaps, but we can’t be sure. Once again, we should point out that Der8auer has carried out a few tests of its own, reproducing this situation of a connector that heats up, even on the power supply side. However, in his case, it was a Corsair unit, an AX1600i.
In any case, this 12V-2×6/12VHPWR connector still seems to be causing problems. What’s more, we still don’t understand NVIDIA’s decision to continue using it, despite the problems it caused with the previous generation. Worse still, the Chameleon is going one step further by using it on its RTX 5090, whose power consumption is exploding. In this case, using a second socket would have been more judicious, leaving a bigger safety margin. Meanwhile, the greens were in “don’t worry, it’s going to be fine” mode , announcing that there would be no more problems with it.
