As we all know, Intel is going through a difficult period, which has led the company to lay off a large number of employees. However, on the AMD side, while things seem to be going well, in reality the company is also announcing a redundancy plan. We’re talking about a 4% reduction in the company’s payroll!
AMD: layoffs of 4% of its employees!
Broadly speaking, the company employs some 26,000 people, and this redundancy plan should affect just over a thousand jobs. It’s not yet clear which sectors will be affected, but it could be the embedded and gaming sectors. Here, competition is fierce, especially with NVIDIA dominating the consumer graphics card sector(88% market share). Moreover, cutting back in these sectors would come as no surprise, given that the brand has officially given up the race for high-end GPUs.
Meanwhile, the company’s other sectors seem to be doing rather well. As far as processors are concerned, the Ryzen range is top-notch. According to TechpowerUp, the Ryzen 9000s are doing quite well, despite a sluggish launch supported by the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. What’s more, it wouldn’t be surprising if the brand were to invest more in the server sector in the future, at least to try and compete with NVIDIA. As for laptops, demand for AI PCs is clearly high.
In short, all this would come on the heels of a mixed quarterly report, we learn. AMD also announced :
” as a part of aligning our resources with our largest growth opportunities, we are taking a number of targeted steps that will unfortunately result in reducing our global workforce by approximately 4 percent “
