Seagate, in turn, is increasing the storage capacity of its hard drives and its Exos series. The capacity of the latter has been increased by 20%, from 20TB to 24TB.
Exos: Seagate announces a 24TB model!
With this new reference, Seagate offers us a hard disk in 3.5″ format. It features a total of 10 platters, each with 2.4TB capacity, and uses CMR (Conventional Magnetic Reccording) technology. It also benefits from helium filling to reduce temperatures, noise and friction.
The 24TB model boasts a speed of 7200 rpm and will be offered with a SATA or SAS interface. As for throughput, Seagate has announced transfer speeds of 285 MB/s, with random read performance of 168 IOPS and random write performance of 272 IOPS. Average latency is 4.16 ms.
Last but not least, the power consumption. Indeed, this type of drive is designed for large-scale deployment in data centers where energy consumption is high. Here, in idle mode, the average power consumption is 6.3W, compared with 8.9W in read mode and 7.1W in write mode.
The price is not yet known. All we know is that the first qualification disks are starting to be shipped to selected customers. Actual availability will have to wait until December. This will be followed by 30TB disks based on HAMR technology in early 2024.
