In the world of notebook PCs, AMD is about to launch a new graphics chip. This takes the form of the RADEON RX 7900M, which promises to be quite powerful for the sector. We learn that this model could rival NVIDIA’s RTX 4080 mobile!
RX 7900M: AMD’s card as powerful as an RTX 4080 mobile?
Clearly, with this new reference, AMD could offer us a GPU based on its Navi 31. As a reminder, this is the GPU that powers the RX 7900 GRE, RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX. However, for this laptop version, the chip will be neutered, with only 72 compute units. As a reminder, an XTX is 96 CU. The number of stream processors would then rise to 4608, a figure 20% higher than the RX 7800 XT and its 3840 sp.
Even so, the frequency would be much lower, with rumors suggesting a GPU no higher than 2000 MHz. At the same time, we don’t want to blow up power consumption, which is already quite high. In fact, the latter is said to be around 160W per defaults. With SmartShift technology, this can be increased to 200W. We imagine this will enable you to maintain higher frequencies for longer. However, watch out for battery life.
Last but not least, we’d like to close with the memory section, as this model could well feature a total of 16 GB of GDDR6. This memory would be based on a 256-bit memory bus, and would compete directly with the RTX 4090 mobile, which shares the same configuration.
In terms of performance, we can expect a GPU to rival NVIDIA’s RTX 4080 mobile. Compared with desktop cards, this would be the equivalent of an RTX 4070 Ti in a laptop , which is far from asthmatic. In addition, the card would benefit from an MCM design with one GCD etched in 5 nm, while four MCDs would be present and etched in 6 nm.
Finally, it seems that AMD is planning to announce its mobile GPU on October 19, when the Threadripper Pro 7000 is also due to be unveiled!
