FSR 3 Frame Gen GTX 1000: high latency?

With its FSR 3 Frame Generation, AMD promises to increase the number of frames/sec achieved in gaming. The other advantage of this technology is that it’s not limited to a certain type of hardware – no, it’s not. In fact, you can even use it with an NVIDIA graphics card, even if it’s an older series. We’re thinking in particular of the GTX 1000s we’ve tested with it!

GTX 1000 FSR 3 Frame Generation, a bad combination?

So, with a small GTX 1060, on Immortal of Aveum, details set to minimum, the card really doesn’t do well by default. Indeed, in the selected scene, the title runs at a particularly low framerate , painfully reaching 25 fps with a latency of around 200 ms. Activating FSR3 won’t improve the situation, with a further deterioration in framerate. However, the addition of Frame Generation (AA) increases the framerate, but latency remains similar, making the game no more enjoyable to play.

Finally, with the GTX 1060, the best compromise is to activate FSR 3 in quality mode and reduce latency with NVIDIA reflex technology. As a result, framerates rise above 30 FPS, while latency remains below 100 ms. Note that with AMD Frame Generation technology, latency exceeds 200 ms. Combining FSR 3 Quality Frame Generation delivers framerates of around 60 fps, but latency is still high. As a result, camera movements will be smoother, but you’ll have to deal with a high reaction time.

A similar situation can be observed with a higher-performance card like the GTX 1070: after activating Frame Generation, latency skyrockets. The reason is simple: even if the hardware is supported, the conditions are not ripe for taking full advantage of the technology!
