The RTX 4070 GDDR6 is an alternative proposed by NVIDIA to meet a temporary shortage of GDDR6X memory. The aim was not to penalise high-end graphics cards and to lighten the mid-range specs. However, even if the two cards have an exact configuration, apart from the memory and memory frequency, what impact does this have on performance? That’s what Wcctech measured in its test of the Galax 1-Click-OC version!
RTX 4070 GDDR6: little difference from its GDDR6X counterpart!
Wcctech carried out extensive tests on video games and synthetic benchmarks. The card was put through its paces on 27 games and 7 different benchmarks.
In the end, the results show that the performance differences between the two models remain very small. In most cases, we have differences within the margin of error between the two models, but two games in particular stand out: Metro Exodus and Alan Wake 2. In these games, the GDDR6X version has a lead of 4.2% and 2.3% in 1080p, 9.1% and 4.8% in 1440p and 10.4% and 2.8% in UHD.
Otherwise, as resolutions increase, and games draw more on memory, the performance gaps widen. While in 1080p we have an overall performance gap of between 0 and 1% in favour of the RTX 4070 GDDR6X, in UHD the gap rises to around 2.3%, with more marked cases as mentioned above.
In the 3DMark synthetic tests, there was no significant difference in scores.
Once again, remember that the difference in characteristics between the two cards only concerns the memory: GDDR6 vs GDDR6X. This difference does have an impact in terms of bandwidth: 480 GB/s vs. 502 GB/s, but this isn’t really felt in games, except at very high resolutions.
However, since both versions are sold at the same price, you might as well go for the GDDR6X model. If you’re going to pay the same price, you might as well go for a card that offers more for the same amount of money.
