New World: EVGA will change the cards

The story of the RTX 3090 cards “cracking” under the New World beta has been the talk of the town for a few days. Today, there is still a lot of uncertainty on the subject, but we do have some factual elements that allow us to see a little more clearly.

For Amazon Games, there is no problem with New World

As you know, New World has been the subject of reports that its use would destroy RTX 3090 graphics cards. These reports have gained enough momentum that Amazon Games has issued a statement on the matter, saying that it has received “a few” reports of players using high-performance graphics cards experiencing hardware failure when using New World. “New World makes standard DirectX calls provided by the Windows API. We have seen no indication of widespread problems with the 3090, either in the beta or during our many months of alpha testing,” the statement continued. Amazon reassures and releases a patch Amazon Games has therefore clearly stated that playing with New World does not cause any risk. And to go further, Amazon Games Studios, has released a patch that limits FPS in the menu without affecting the quality of the rest of the game.

EVGA implicitly acknowledges the problems.

While the cases seemed to target RTX 3090s in general, eyes quickly turned to EVGA. A design flaw in the card’s in-house controller is said to be the cause of the problems. This “in-house” controller being an EVGA claim to use it instead of the 3090’s native systems, this is one hell of a story for the brand. JayzTwoCents ( aka Jason Langevin ) who is relatively close to EVGA, said in a recently published video, that the brand has confirmed to him that it has already shipped products, in advance SAV, to those whose GPUs had problems with the New World beta. This means that EVGA is shipping replacement cards before the ones that had a problem are sent back and tested by its technical department.

Beyond EVGA’s RTX 3090 and even New World, other problems persist.

Igor Lab’s has done a lot of work to explain the problem highlighted by New World but that could be found elsewhere. It is necessary to dissociate the case of EVGA and the others. In the first case, it’s clearly a design problem and it tarnishes the reputation of the brand. But there are still cases of overheating of the card in case of FPS overload. AMD and Nvidia cards (not only the 3090) have internal limitations to prevent these risks but flaws remain explaining the runaway fans and even the FPS drops in some cases. We will have to watch the reaction of the brands to ensure a protection to a problem found almost by chance…
