All things must come to an end, and SSDs are no exception. Indeed, the Crucial brand (owned by Micron) has just announced the retirement of its MX500 series, a range of SSDs launched in January 2018, which is to say it’s old. However, advances in the field mean that this series is no longer interesting hence the brand’s discontinuation.
MX500: the end!
Remember, this series was first launched in January 2018 and was still on sale, even today. The range has had an extremely long lifespan for SSDs, that’s beautiful.
More seriously, with this series, we found a complete range offering a wide choice of capacities. The range included storage capacities of 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and even 4TB for the largest model in the series. Internally, we had TLC memory with different references depending on production. The same applied to the controller, which was sometimes a Silicon Motion SM2258H and sometimes a SM2259H. Nevertheless, all these versions offered the same characteristics.
In terms of formats, there was the classic 2.5″ SSD, but there were also versions in M.2 format. However, we’re not talking about a PCIe SSD here, no, because we’re talking about a SATA III 6 Gbps interface.
Finally, even if the series is affordable, don’t lose sight of the fact that the competition is tough… Even within Crucial. At the moment, for the price of an MX500, you can find PCIe P3 Plus drives that are much more powerful. The same applies to the reduction in SATA ports on motherboards and the public’s preference for M.2 PCIe.
However, if you’re interested in upgrading your storage, you should know that stocks are still available and that this series is not very hard to find. For that, you can always turn to Amazon!
