Contact frame: not compatible with LGA-1851

With the arrival of the LGA-1700, we saw the advent of the contact frame. As described here, this is a part, often made of aluminium, used to provide better contact between the CPU and the fan by ‘straightening’ the processor’s IHS. Being elongated, the force of the basic ILM deforms the processor capsule, degrading its performance. Well, if you had one, you should know that it won’t be compatible with the LGA-1851!

While there is no change in the centre-to-centre distance between the LGA-1700 and 1851 sockets , this does not mean that there is no change in socket dimensions. In fact, we now learn that the 1851 is slightly larger than the current LGA-1700, which will pose a problem for the installation of frame contacts such as the Thermal Grizzly and Thermalright solutions.

In addition, we have learned that Intel will be using an ILM (locking mechanism), offering less pressure than that used on the current LGA-1700. Logically, we should have less of this problem of distortion of the processors’ IHS.

To be continued… In any case, we can count on people like Der8auer to test all these aspects. And if there really is a problem, new solutions adapted to the new socket will emerge, of that we can be sure.
