AMD B840 & B850: no mainstream motherboards before 2025

While we were expecting the arrival of more aggressive motherboards for the new AMD generations, here too we learn of a postponement: motherboards equipped with the B840 and B850 chipsets will not arrive until early 2025. That’s quite a gap in the timetable for these boards based on AMD’s 800 chipset, since X870E boards will be available by the end of September. The B850 (undoubtedly strongly derived from the B650) could have represented an interesting solution at a time when motherboard prices are tending to soar.

AMD chipset 800

It’s more bad news for Ryzen 9000s, since the B850 is intended to be the ” profitable ” mid-range model, while the B840 is clearly positioned at the entry-level. In the end, the equipment is considerably reduced in the smallest model, even if manufacturers can still make a few adjustments.

Understanding the AMD family of 800 chipsets

To clarify the positioning of these chipsets, the B840 looks like the successor to the boards built around the Ax20 chipset. It’s clearly an entry-level chipset, but can be interesting for those who don’t want to tinker with their PC. The B850 is the successor to the B650 chipset, but it is not yet officially known whether AMD plans to release the B850E chipset. The X870/X870E and B850 chipsets will enable processor overclocking, whereas the B840 will not. Finally, as you can see from the table above, segmentation will also be based on port he motherboards of AMD X870 and X870E chipsets will be delivered with native PCI-E support. Motherboards for AMD X870 and X870E chipsets will be supplied with native PCI-E support. Motherboards for AMD X870 and X870E chipsets will be supplied with native PCI-E 5.0 5.0 support. For the B850, a choice will have to be made, but overall, PCI-E 5.0 will be used for SSDs.
