Arrow Lake, towards a TjMax maintained at 105°C?

From Intel, we learn that the brand may well maintain the TjMax for its future Arrow Lake processors. The latter would then remain at 105°C on laptops. This news comes to us from @jaykihn0 on X.

Arrow Lake: TjMax goes up!

In the world of processors, the TjMax is the maximum temperature at which a processor can operate. When the CPU reaches this temperature, preservation mechanisms are activated. These include lowering frequencies to reduce power consumption and thus heating. Of course, in this kind of scenario, performance is affected.

However, raising the temperature limit is not necessarily a bad thing. Indeed, it may show that Intel has confidence in its CPUs and that they can withstand higher temperatures without damage. However, on a portable machine, this can quickly become unpleasant, even if it does enable a high level of performance to be maintained for longer.

At present, Meteor Lake CPUs already display these temperature limits and, in some cases, even go a little higher. This is particularly true of the Core Ultra 5 115U, at 110°C.

However, just because the TjMax has been raised doesn’t mean that CPUs will operate at higher temperatures. If you have a Ryzen 7000, it’s a safe bet that your CPU will stay below 95°C, their maximum temperature. If the CPU regularly reaches this limit, you may need to consider a new heatsink.
