The last word:

Our first impression: “Perfect timing for the arrival of this new AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D! The lackluster launch of the Intel Core Ultra 200S, especially on the gaming side, left a perfect niche if the Ryzen 7 9800X3D could fit in, and it has.

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D vs AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D :

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D unquestionably has a number of advantages over the previous generation. This new processor performs better, heats up much less and, above all, has the same overclocking potential as the other Ryzen 9000X processors.

But we’re still a little disappointed. Given the increased frequencies of this new R7 9800X3D, we could have hoped for more than an average 6-8% gain in gaming performance . We’d almost be inclined to say that it’s the increased frequencies that actually deliver this gain, and not the new 9000X architecture. However, our other readings of the 1% low FPS show a very interesting gain for the R7 9800X3D with, for example, on COD Modern Warfare 3, a 1% low at 218 FPS for the 9800X3D, 198 FPS for the 7800X3D and 175 FPS for the 9700X. If you add overclocking and cooler temperatures, these are real pluses for this newcomer! It’s hard to say whether our example has excellent overclocking potential, but it’s not worried about keeping up with 5.5 Ghz on all cores!

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D vs AMD Ryzen 7 9700X (105w) :

Overall performance in our various multi-core benchmarks is close, and even often to the advantage of our R7 9800X3D. Once we pit them against each other in the gaming section, an even bigger gap emerges. Now let’s not forget that these two processors are not at all on a similar price scale, since the Ryzen 7 9700X is currently on sale in Germany at 355 euros, while our R7 9800X3D will cost over 500 euros.

All in all, a successful gamble coupled with perfect timing makes this new AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D the new king of gaming! What’s more, AMD is determined to push hard for its new-generation Ryzen 9000X processor by lowering launch prices. The price received from AMD France indicates a recommended retail price of 529.90 euros, or around thirty euros more than the 7800X3D sold in Germany. It remains to be seen how many processors will be available at launch, and what prices will be charged in France.

And what about Intel?

Well, it’s complicated! While the Intel Core Ultra 200S gave us full satisfaction in the synthetic benchmarks, things are more complicated in the gaming section where the Core Ultra 9 285K fails to do as well as the i9 14900K(S), from the previous generation. The arrival of Intel profiles integrated into manufacturers’ latest BIOSes doesn’t help the blues. We’re still wondering about Windows 11 24H2. Despite a perfectly up-to-date OS, we’re still experiencing installation problems with some Z890 motherboards. As far as performance is concerned, we’re not convinced by the results of the Core Ultra 200S .

We’re not the only ones asking these questions, and we’re rather surprised that Intel hasn’t communicated more on the subject. Naturally, we’ll be keeping a close eye on updates over the coming weeks to see if anything changes in terms of gaming performance. The absence of any communication from Intel regarding the longevity of socket LGA-1851 does not reassure potential buyers either. We’ll end with this question: “What if Intel had a processor with vcache3D in the pipeline?

Thanks to AMD for making this copy of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D available.
