Installation and Verdict

Monoblock Installation

Installing the Alphacool monoblock on the ASUS ROG STRIX X870-F Wi-Fi motherboard is a breeze. The included user manual is precise and detailed. We walk you through the process in the video below. The main steps are:

  • Installing the CPU
  • Installing the SSD in the first slot without reattaching its heatsink
  • Removing the ILM and the original cooler mounts
  • Removing the VRM heatsinks and the I/O shield
  • Applying thermal paste and thermal pads (included and pre-cut)
  • Securing the original I/O cover to the monoblock
  • Positioning and tightening the monoblock

The result is striking and evokes the golden age of monoblocks in custom water cooling. The block integrates perfectly with the rest of the motherboard. We’d even go so far as to say that it adds a real touch of character to this model, which had been struggling to find its place in the ASUS lineup.

The Radiators: Not So Simple

Cooler Master’s FreeFrom 2.0 design stands out, among other things, for its heatsink/fan mounting system. It offers a wide range of adjustment in two dimensions, but it achieves this by drilling a multitude of holes into the aluminum structure—where most brands prefer to install rails. This choice makes installation relatively time-consuming and tedious, especially when you want to try out several different configurations, multiple radiators, and so on. However, in our opinion, it’s ultimately an excellent choice. In fact, a major advantage over rails is that once the components are installed, they are securely fastened, perfectly aligned, and won’t budge a millimeter, even during transport. This is a major asset when designing a custom loop with rigid tubing.

So, after some initial trial and error, we were pleased to find that our top and bottom radiators were perfectly aligned. We had actually connected them with a single rigid tube at first (an option we didn’t use for the final loop).

Maximum Thickness

A note on thickness. The combined radiator and fan assembly must not exceed 75 mm. In practice, we’ll aim to limit it to 70 mm (which is what we did here), especially if the radiators are installed on the front side of the case. At 75 mm, there’s a high risk of contact with the CPU cables at the top and the graphics card at the bottom. In fact, we weren’t able to use the 5.0 riser provided by Cooler Master. It was too thick at the bottom and came into contact with the fans. We replaced it with a less bulky ASUS model.

Overall, installing the radiators is no walk in the park. Between the time-consuming assembly and disassembly, limited accessibility at both the top and bottom (mainly due to the central structure), and thickness restrictions, you have to juggle these constraints. It’s ironic for such a large case. On the other hand, once you’ve found the ideal setup, the result is more than satisfying: rock-solid mounting, with the radiators, fans, and tubes prominently showcased.

Fittings and Tubing: A Pleasant Surprise

After struggling with the radiator installation, we were relieved to try out the new Apex Grip line. There’s almost nothing to criticize about these fittings. The tension on the swivel models is ideal. The rubber ring is indeed a plus for grip and tightening. Above all, the sealing and clamping mechanism on the rigid fittings is perfect. It inspires confidence and automatically ranks among the best in its category.

MasterFrame 360 STAGE LCDIf we had to point out any flaws, we’d note that these are among the widest models on the market. We would definitely not recommend them for SFF builds. In that case, the Thermal Grizzly line is a much better fit. By way of comparison, the Apex Grip clamping rings are as wide as those on Optimus’s 10/16 flexible models, and the dual-rotating offsets match the dimensions of EKWB’s new-generation models. Finally, the clamping system for the flexible fittings may prove too aggressive depending on the type of 10/16 mm tubing chosen: it grips the tubing too tightly and too early, causing it to rotate while the ring is being tightened. Once tightening is complete, the tube slowly returns to its original position… and loosens the fitting on the opposite side. In this (rare) scenario, you must hold the tube in place while tightening.

The Custom Loop

The initial plan included two loops. In addition to the Eisbecher, we planned to add a reservoir-less top-feed pump above the feedline. Ultimately, we opted for a single loop for the sake of simplicity, but made sure to keep the dual-loop option open in case we wanted to go back to it later. To do this, the rear chamber contains only flexible tubing. Specifically, we removed the rigid tube that connected the two radiators and replaced it with an oversized flexible tube. In fact, all it will take is disconnecting it and connecting it to a pump head to switch to a dual-loop setup, without even having to cut it to size.

At the front— since this is a showcase buildthe tubes will be rigid and must be perfectly aligned. This poses no particular difficulty, thanks to the precise positioning of the radiators via FreeForm 2.0. All that remains is to ensure communication between the front and rear chambers. Once again, the MasterFrame 360 Stage LCD simplifies the task. The decorative metal plate separating the chambers can be removed without tools. So we drill the holes outside the case, install Alphacool low-profile bulkhead fittings,and put the plate back in place.

The result: a loop that looks minimalist but is scalable as needed. We fill the loop with colored coolant to make the tubing stand out… and move on to the Stage.

MasterFrame 360 Stage LCD: Screen and Stage

MasterFrame 360 STAGE LCDYou’ll either love it or hate it. In any case, this front-mounted Stage is the ultimate expression of a showcase build. It’s complemented here by a display with a simple function: it’s connected to the motherboard via an internal USB cable and features physical buttons beneath the chassis. A shortcut (center + right buttons) switches it to storage mode. It then appears in the list of USB devices. The folder contains the driver for configuration and allows you to transfer files to display (JPG or MP4). The screen can then be used as a slideshow with those files or as a secondary display. You can switch between modes directly using the buttons under the chassis.

MasterFrame 360 Stage LCD: Verdict

The MasterFrame 360 Stage LCD is a real oddball, even within the FreeForm 2.0 lineup. It’s a mixed bag. As spacious as it is restrictive in places, as satisfying as it is frustrating, it’s definitely intended for modding, and we recommend it for that purpose. But it requires careful planning in certain areas… while being extremely flexible in others.

In and of itself, it’s a bold product that pushes boundaries, experiments, and isn’t afraid to impose its own constraints. It divides opinion, but has already sparked a trend. In fact, our latest trip to Taiwan for Computex 2026 allowed us to observe that many brands are interested in this trend. The majority of the “case” booths we visited featured at least one model equipped with a “stage” designed to display a figurine (some even had several).

As for the new Alphacool lineup and its monoblock: it’s a flawless release that confirms the momentum the brand has built over the past two years. The worlds of modding and custom water cooling seem to be experiencing a burst of creativity after a long slumber—stay tuned.
