AMD Ryzen 9 7950X : liquid cooling almost mandatory ?

It is through a leak from Gigabyte that we can now have an almost definitive idea of the TDP of the future Ryzen 7000. Even if this leak on recent internal documents of Gigabyte can be worth confirming, we note that this document had already appeared almost 1 year ago. This remark opens up several hypotheses: either it is a true and definitive confirmation and to equip oneself with Ryzen 9 7950X will require an investment, or one can still express some doubts about these data. Ryzen 9 7950X: “strong” AIO essential?

For the launch, which should arrive in the next few days, the consensus seems to be on a relatively short range from the start. The AMD Ryzen 7000 family of processors would only consist of five models: Ryzen 5 7600X, Ryzen 7 7800X, Ryzen 9 7900X and Ryzen 9 7950X . On these 5 references, the document from the leak of Gigabyte allows to extrapolate the TDP :

  • The Ryzen 5 7600X would have a TDP of 95W up to a consumption of 125W.
  • The Ryzen 7 7800X would have a TDP of 105W up to a consumption of 142W.
  • The Ryzen 9 7900X would have a TDP of 120W up to a consumption of 170W.
  • The Ryzen 9 7950X would have a TDP of 170W going up to a consumption of 230W.

The AMD Ryzen 9 7950X will therefore have a significantly higher TDP (+ 60% compared to the current Ryzen 9 5950X). Without overclocking and other performance optimizations, the consumption of 230 W will require the use of an AIO equipped with a 280 mm radiator for proper cooling. A situation that should also be found on some of Intel’s Raptor Lakes and which encourages some brands to be optimistic for end-of-year sales…
