The serious news of the day comes from Digitimes, which reports that TSMC is gearing up for a major launch in 2022 with Nvidia. This production most likely involves Ada Lovelace.

RTX 40: back to TSMC with 5nm

According to Taiwanese sources, after using TSMC’s 5nm process and chip-on-wafer-on-substrate (CoWoS) packaging technology for its Hopper H100 data center GPU, Nvidia is reportedly turning away from Samsung and entrusting the Taiwanese foundry with its next Ada Lovelace architecture RTX 40 GPU. The RTX 40 would therefore have the 5 nm process of TSMC. The leaks on Ada Lovelace production are extremely accurate as it is revealed that the GeForce RTX 40 GPU will adopt the FC-BGA assembly standard and that ASE Technology and its subsidiary Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) have secured most of the assembly orders. Finally, at the end of the chain is King Yuan Electronics (KYEC), which would provide lapping services. The company has been in partnership with Nvidia for several years, and it is in its premises that the GPUs will be tested. For the moment, no date is obviously mentioned with precision since nothing has started with the above-mentioned partners. Since the end of the summer, there have been leaks about the supposed performance of Ada Lovelace GPUs. There is talk of a 70% increase in the number of cuda cores! Finally, the new versions of GDDR6X from Micron, would help to pass a milestone in terms of bandwidth.

Ada Lovelace in 2022… Really?

Now these leaks, which are very reliably sourced, confirm that Nvidia will switch back to TSMC next year. Does this automatically mean that the new GPUs will arrive next year? It seems hard to imagine. At most, we can expect them to arrive at the end of 2022. But as the competition gets tougher, could Nvidia review its plans and speed up the pace? At this moment we have no reliable information on a possible schedule.
